Pervasive computing research attacks fundamental problems in the design and deployment of massively distributed and complex embedded systems. The natural progression of research to commercial realisations of pervasive systems is taking the developments from laboratory examples to real-world deployments. Examples include gaming systems such as manhattan-pacman, location based services such as find-it-type applications, environmental monitoring projects such as great duck island, and so on. However, implicit in all of these deployments are the scale assumptions of the existing research developments. They are premised on: deployments of hundreds rather than billions of sensors; on local communications at the expense of the global movement of users; on early representations of context and knowledge; and ad-hoc abstractions and programming primitives. Moreover, the fundamental issues of privacy and trust that these systems exhibit are only now being raised. Our vision is one of a pervasive system that is both globally available and responsive, and tailored to the context of the individual - the global ubiquitous computer. Our research challenge is to take the complex sensory information and personalisation technologies and provide the underpinning programming and communications models that will allow these to be deployed on the global ubiquitous computer in a manner that respects personal privacy and engenders trust.
