Biography

Professor Paddy Nixon is Science Foundation Ireland Research Professor in Distributed Systems at University College Dublin. He holds a B.Sc., M.A. and Ph.D. in Computer Science, is a chartered engineer and a member of the BCS, ACM and IEEE.  He leads the Systems Research Institute at UCD supported by a €2.5m Science Foundation Ireland endowment for his chair. The group is involved in 2 major national centres in Software Engineering (Lero) and the SensorWeb (Clarity).

Professor Nixon has significant industrial and commercial experience. He has  had active collaborations with INTEL, Microsoft Research, HP, INTEL, Oracle and IBM. From 2007-2009 he was Director of the INTEL Technogloy for Independat Livign Centre; INTELs largest University based research centre with direct funding of $30 million. He has been a founder of three start-ups and was founding CEO of NDRC Ltd (www.ndrc.ie) an IP development company supported by a €25 million investment by the Irish government. Professor Nixon is IBM faculty fellow in Autonomics.

His research interests lie in the areas of Pervasive  and Autonomic Computing and with specific emphasis on infrastructure aspects of Distributed Computing, Component Software Engineering, Resource Discovery, Context Adaptive Systems and Mobile Code systems.   This work has been funded by IDA, EPSRC, SFI, Enterprise Ireland, US Airforce and the EU fourth/fifth/sixth framework, EPSRC and industry.  He has published over 200 publications and 7 edited books. He is programme chair for UBICOMP 2010 (the permier conference in ubiquitous computing) and has previously been programme or general chair for Pervasive, Percom, ECOOP, iTrust and MPAC.

Professor Nixon has been a visiting professor at Caltech, Warsaw University, and Kaunas University. He has given the prestigious Science and Society public lecture for the Royal Edinburgh Society and given keynotes and numerous conferences.

Research

Research Interests:

Pervasive Computing; Adaptive Information; Autonomic Computing; Middleware; Applied Formal Methods.

Pervasive computing research attacks fundamental problems in the design and deployment of massively distributed and complex embedded systems. The natural progression of research to commercial realisations of pervasive systems is taking the developments from laboratory examples to real-world deployments. Examples include gaming systems such as manhattan-pacman, location based services such as find-it-type applications, environmental monitoring projects such as great duck island, and so on. However, implicit in all of these deployments are the scale assumptions of the existing research developments. They are premised on: deployments of hundreds rather than billions of sensors; on local communications at the expense of the global movement of users; on early representations of context and knowledge; and ad-hoc abstractions and programming primitives. Moreover, the fundamental issues of privacy and trust that these systems exhibit are only now being raised. Our vision is one of a pervasive system that is both globally available and responsive, and tailored to the context of the individual - the global ubiquitous computer. Our research challenge is to take the complex sensory information and personalisation technologies and provide the underpinning programming and communications models that will allow these to be deployed on the global ubiquitous computer in a manner that respects personal privacy and engenders trust.
