Biography
Dr. Michela Bertolotto received a BSc (1993) and a PhD degree in Computer Science (1998) from the University of Genova (Italy). Subsequently she worked at the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA) and the Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering of the University of Maine as a postdoctoral research associate. Since September 2000 she has been working in the School of Computer Science and Informatics at University College Dublin, where she currently holds a Senior Lecturer position. Her main research interests include spatio-temporal data modelling, mobile and web-based GIS (in particular the development of progressive spatial data transmission techniques), spatio-temporal data mining and the application of case-based reasoning techniques to GIS and Health. Dr. Bertolotto is leading a research group including 3 (MSc/PhD) students and three postdoctoral researchers. She has supervised to completion 4 MSc and 9 PhD students. Six of her former PhD students have secured postdoctoral academic positions in Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Canada and the UK. She has acted as external examiner for PhD theses in Italy, Spain and Denmark. She has published over 90 scientific papers in prestigious journals and conferences in GIS and related disciplines, and has been in the Program Committee of all major International GIS events. She has chaired 4 GIS workshops and co-edited 4 volumes. She has been an invited speaker in several International institutions including ETH (Switzerland) and Rutgers University (USA). She is a regular reviewer for several major journals in GIScience including International Journal of Geographical Information Science (Taylor and Francis), IEEE Transactions on Geosciences and Remote Sensing, GeoInformatica (Springer), and Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing. She has been invited to be a reviewer by the EU and the Dutch Government. She has active research collaborations with several International institutions including University of North Carolina (Dr. David Wilson), Purdue University (Prof. Elisa Bertino), University of Genova (Prof. Giovanna Guerrini), University of Salerno (Prof. Filomena Ferrucci) and University of Napoli Federico II (Dr. Sergio Di Martino).
