Biography
I am a co-principal investigator, project manager and team leader at the CLARITY Centre for SensorWeb Technologies in Ireland and a postdoctoral researcher at University College Dublin (UCD), School of Computer Science and Informatics.
I received a 4 year degree (laurea 110/110 cum laude) in Computer Science at the University of Bologna, in 1998, and a PhD in Computer Science from UCD, in 2008.
Besides my involvement in academia, I have more than 12 years of professional experience in the software industry during which I built up strong architectural design skills, especially in the area of distributed systems, system integration and enterprise applications.
My research focuses on ubiquitous & cognitive robotic systems and control architectures for autonomous agents, embracing both artificial intelligence and software engineering aspects.
I lead the European project RUBICON - Robotic UBIquitous COgnitive Network (FP7-ICT-269914), a 2.5M project, focusing on creating a self-organizing, learning and goal-oriented robotic ecology - where a robotic ecology is defined as a network of heterogeneous computational nodes interfaced with sensors, effectors and mobile robot devices.
I am co-principal investigator of the European project HOBNET - HOlistic Platform Design for Smart Buildings of the Future InterNET (FP7-ICT/FIRE-257466), and project manager for the European project FIEMSER (FP7-ICT-248605), in the area of energy efficiency in buildings.
Together with Professor Gregory M.P. O'Hare, I coordinate the Ubirobot, Ubiquitous Robotic Test-bed, a collective of mobile robots which constitutes a university wide service for all researchers interested in developing ubiquitous robot applications.Ancillary Research Activities

Research
Research Interests:
My research focuses on ubiquitous & cognitive robotic systems and control architectures for autonomous agents, embracing both artificial intelligence and software engineering aspects.
I lead the European project RUBICON - Robotic UBIquitous COgnitive Network (FP7-ICT-269914), a 2.5M project, focusing on creating a self-sustaining, self-organizing, learning and goal-oriented robotic ecology - where a robotic ecology is defined as a network of heterogeneous computational nodes interfaced with sensors, effectors and mobile robot devices.
Enabling robots to seamlessly operate as part of such robotic ecologies is an important and extended challenge for robotics R&D and a key enabler for a range of advanced robotic applications. I coordinated the writing of the RUBICON proposal in 2010 availing of a coordination funding grant awarded by Enterprise Ireland.
Together with Professor Gregory M.P. O'Hare, I coordinate the Ubirobot, Ubiquitous Robotic Test-bed (http://ubirobot.ucd.ie), a collective of mobile robots which constitutes a university wide service for all researchers interested in developing ubiquitous robot applications.
I am one of the core developers of the Agent Factory agent programming toolkit (http://www.agentfactory.com), the Octopus visualization GUI for WSN, and the SIXTH WSN middleware.
