Biography

Kevin graduated from University College Dublin with a B.Sc. (Hons.) in computer science in 2003. During his degree, Kevin spent over a year working as a software engineer and system administrator in ChangingWorlds, a mobile personalisation software company. In 2008 he attained a PhD in computer science under the supervision of Prof. Barry Smyth and Dr. Lorraine McGinty, and now works as a postdoctoral researcher in Clarity.

Kevin's research interests are reflected in his current projects which encompass: personalisation, recommender systems, artificial intelligence, critique-based feedback, context-aware systems, user modelling, social networks, search, reputation systems, mobile internet, human computer interaction, eye tracking and intelligent interfaces. Together with his colleagues Prof. Barry Smyth and Dr. Michael O'Mahony, Kevin is part of a research team which was awarded an Enterprise Ireland Innovation Partnership grant of 200K euro in 2010 in collaboration with the smart economy technology startup, Weedle (www.weedle.com). The project relates to the areas of search, recommendation, reviewing and reputation. Kevin has published over 30 journal, conference and workshop papers and has presented his research across the world. He received two best paper awards for his research at the Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-Based Systems (AH) and the British Artificial Intelligence (AI) conferences. He has also been a guest lecturer at various Irish institutions. Kevin currently serves on the Program Committee of a number of leading International Conferences including: Recommender Systems (RecSys), Adaptive and Self-adaptive Systems and Applications (ADAPTIVE), Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science (AICS), the Workshop on Coupled Display Visual Interfaces (PPD) and the UK Workshop on Case-Based Reasoning (UK-CBR). He is also a regular reviewer for many journals and international conferences which include: Transactions on the Web, European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI), International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ICCBR), Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI), User Modelling (UM) and E-Commerce.

In addition to his research activities, Kevin has also been involved in a range of education endeavours. He has lectured a course on adaptive personalisation for postgraduate students, and for several years designed and administered artificial intelligence practicals for undergraduates. Currently Kevin mentors a number of PhD, final year and intern students in CLARITY under the supervision of Prof. Barry Smyth.
