Within the next few years, the proliferation of
advanced, GPS-enabled wireless devices will afford many opportunities for
providing both recreational and professional users with a wide variety of
location-aware services. Current work
in mobile geo-spatial information applications, however, is limited in scope
and does not take advantage of a wealth of available spatial information. This research proposes the development of an
advanced intelligent geo-spatial information architecture that can provide
users with highly-efficient, fine-grained, and personalised map information.
Moreover, the project proposes an infrastructure for augmented reality, in
which individual users can augment spatial locations with a variety of
media. Upon entering such an augmented
location, relevant information, personalised to the user's interests within
that space, can be accessed and presented.
Such an architecture will provide a powerful base for enhancing existing
recreational and professional services, as well as opening new markets for
developing comprehensive content for augmenting spatial reality.
