UCD CSI Innovative Technology Exhibit

Event: CSI Innovative Technology Exhibition

Location: Computer Science and Informatics Building, UCD Belfield.

The CSI Innovative Technology Exhibition showcased some of the exciting research outputs from UCD’s School of Computer Science and Informatics. This event was part of the a week-long festival of events highlighting and promoting innovaton in the city: http://www.innovationdublin.ie.

The purpose of this event was to present live technology demonstrations and poster exhibits to both the general public and industry representatives. In addition, there was an invited talk by Sam Samuel, Executive Director of Bell Labs UK & Ireland on Bell Labs and University Partnering [Abstract] [Slides]. This was followed by a "lively" panel discussion on the topic: should all academic research activity be informed by commercial needs?

Panelists on the night included:

* Dr Sean Baker, co-founder of Iona Technologies, Irish Software Association Chair, adjunct-Prof. UCD

* Joe Drumgoole, CloudSplit.com and George Hook Show

* Sam Samuel, Executive Director of Bell Labs UK and Ireland

* Prof. Barry Smyth, UCD Digital Chair, co-founder and chief scientific officer at ChangingWorlds (a UCD spin-out)

* Dr Fred Cummins, UCD Lecturer
