Introduction to Computer Science and Programming (ICSP2009)

Interested in computers but don’t know much about them? Interested in seeing what Computer Science at university is all about? in 2009 UCD CSI will again be running Introduction to Computer Science and Programming (ICSP)”, a new module aimed at opening up the world of computers and programming, to senior cycle students (TY, 5th and 6th years ), for exploration and discovery. UCD CSI are currently applications from current Leaving Certificate level (TY,5th and 6th year) students to participate in this new initiative.
Module Structure
The module itself is a distance learning module which will run over 12 weeks. During this period, students will be required to spend 3 or 4 Saturdays in UCD to attend lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. These will be full day events and will lunches will be supplied for all attendees.
Students will be provided with login information which they will use to access our course servers. These servers will host all relevant information to assist students in the completion of the module. Access to an internet connection and email is mandatory for applicants as project submissions, access to support and resources will be web-based.
Accepted applicants will be provided with the software they require to complete the programming elements of the module upon commencement.
UCD CSI have a dedicated team of support personnel to assist students as well as online support at pre-designated times throughout the 12 weeks of the module.
Allocation of places on the module is subject to a review process with a limit of 40 students per academic year.
Completion of this module takes approximately 100 – 120 hours of home study, project work and on-site tuition over the 12 week period.
What will I learn?
During this module you will learn the basic building blocks of computer science and programming and be shown how what our students learn in university is applied in everyday life. Not only this, but completion of the module entitles you to 5 credits which may be claimed on successful application to one of UCD’s Computer Science programmes. This means you will have some college work done before you even arrive!
Students will study a number of topics within Computer Science, including hardware, networking and programming as well as a receiving an introduction to the real world application of what our students learn.
Cost of Module: €150 per applicant (includes lunches and materials)
