This module will introduce students to the breadth and depth of Computer Science. The course will cover major areas of current activity in the School with different guest lecturers giving weekly talks on the topics covered; for example, social networking, graph theory, evolutionary computing, databases, and natural language processing. The module has a significant practical component running parallel to the lectures that will involve group presentations, additional topic research and the development of related skills. Part of the module will cover aspects of career development to help students understand, for example, personality/work environment fit, public and private sector employment opportunities (content subject to market fluctuation), and professional practice at work. Contact will be made with graduate employers within the IT sector.
